The presentation will focus on aging in the horse looking at some of the management concerns medical issues that present in the elder equine. Particular emphasis will be paid to the demographics of the older horse and gastrointestinal and pituitary dysfunction.

The last surviving person from the Morgan Horse Club’s Board of Directors meeting in New York City, Marilyn Childs, had more than 20 years as an AMHA director from residence in Pennsylvania to Harolyn Hill in Vermont where Justin Morgan is buried. She served over 20 years as chair of the Rules Committee and has viewed many changes in breed promotion more than 70 years.

Advances in reproductive technologies have been both a blessing and a curse for horse breeders. To attain the highest fertility, management of both the stallion and mare must be excellent. Katie hopes to shed some insight on both the mare and stallion side of conception through a combination of personal experience, recent research, and fundamentals. Breeders and non-breeders will enjoy learning more about this topic.

Advances in nutrition and horse care have made it so our hardy horses are living even longer, but with these improved feeds have come challenges in feeding the Morgan. Almost all equine nutrition research has been done on Thoroughbreds which are metabolically different from our Morgans. Miner Institute has worked collaboratively with several universities to begin to understand how Morgan horses use the feeds we put in front of them.

Compares today’s Morgans with the woodcut of Justin Morgan found in Volume I of the Morgan Horse Registry. Reveals the extraordinary steps taken by AMHA in 1972 to establish a universally accepted Morgan Judging Standards.

Dr. Merriam will be discussing the many soundness issues peculiar to our breed and the many new therapies (and not so new) that may be implemented to help. From shockwave to stem cells to acid and other amazing things, there are lots of new therapies out there as well as some old ones like acupuncture, poultices, and herbal wraps.
